Possible Internet Sources of Grant Information

This section is a new feature of the funding directory due to the rapid expansion of Internet access. A recent issue of Philanthropy News Digest noted that 1998 saw foundations use web sites, not just to post program descriptions and grants lists, but also to offer reports, feature articles, and news updates.[1] In searching for information on funding sources, it became apparent that foundations use web sites for communication purposes. Web sites augment staff time spent communicating about foundation objectives and application procedures. The future use of web sites and search tools is expected to increase in the next few years.
The sources listed are broad search sites that can be used to connect to several additional national and state sites.

Foundation Center (www.fdncenter.org)
An independent national service organization established by foundations to provide an authoritative source of information on foundation and corporate giving. Features the guide to funding research and resources as well as information on workshops on proposal writing and grant research. This site has links to web sites at private and community foundations, corporate giving programs, and public charities. Although the number of grantmaking foundations with web sites is growing dramatically, only a small percentage of them presently maintain web sites. Thus, the printed directories and CD-ROM database of Contacts are also necessary for grantseekers. The Foundation Center web site also provides Foundation Finder a free search tool to provide the latest facts on approximately 46,000 foundations.[2] It is designed for those seeking quick access to core information about a foundation. It asks for a foundation name or part of the name. It will then provide the full foundation name, address, phone numbers, Contact person, fax numbers, email addresses, Internet URL addresses, the year-end date of the fiscal year, assets at the end of that year, and total giving for that fiscal year. This information is also offered free to the public at five regional Foundation Centers and at more than 200 cooperating collection libraries‹sixteen of which are located in Texas. A list of Texas Foundation Center Cooperating Collections locations is included in this directory.

Nonprofit Resource Center of Texas (www.fic.org)
The Center offers technical assistance, consultation, and training opportunities for board members, staff, and volunteers of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. They also publish the Directory of Texas Foundations (17th edition 1997/1998), which provides information on 2,621 private and community foundations in Texas. Full profiles are included for 1,776 of these foundations. The directory allows you to research foundations by areas of interest, city, foundation name, trustees and officers, and types of support. Price of 17th edition: $120. On-line database services available also for $300 per year or $50 for one month. Several publications, newsletters, class listings, and statistical tables are available from the Center¹s web site.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (www.rwjf.org)
The nation¹s largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. An extensive site offering daily news updates, research reports, information on programs and projects, and links to other resources in health.

The University of Texas at Austin - Research (www.utexas.edu/research)
Through the Funding Resources key available on this homepage, access is provided to several federal catalogs of assistance, private funding sources (including societies and foundations), and a Research Alert Newsline that is updated weekly. Links are available to GrantsWeb, Community of Science (COS), and FEDIX three comprehensive search sites and direct links to most federal funding sources (e.g., National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Mental Health, Department of Defense, and the National Science Foundation).

Other interesting sites:
Aspen Publishers, Inc. (www.grantscape.com)
Lists of publications and courses available in grant writing.

Council on Foundations (www.cof.org)
A nonprofit membership association of grantmaking foundations and corporations. Assists existing and future grantmakers by promoting responsible and effective philanthropy. Foundation News & Commentary articles are available. List of publications, conferences, and workshops available. This site is not for those looking for funding; refer to Foundation Center site. This site provides general information regarding issues and changes in grantmaking for the grantseeker. Council grantmaker member access by ID and key word is available.

Idealist (www.idealist.org)
Described as the largest directory of nonprofits. Any nonprofit foundation, organization, or support group can add a link to this site. It provides a searchable database by key word, country, or program. Job and internships listings with nonprofits around the world are also listed.

Internet Nonprofit Center (www.nonprofits.org)
This also may be of interest to grantseekers because it has information about nonprofits, public charities, and private foundations. Potential donors or volunteers can find addresses or information about any nonprofit organization. Information is based upon files from the IRS, and it is updated every six months.

Northern California Community Foundation, Inc. (www.foundations.org)
An electronic directory of charitable grantmakers provided by the Northern California Community Foundation, Inc.

1 Philanthropy News Digest, Vol. 4, Issue 52, December 30, 1998.
2 The database includes community, company-sponsored, independent and operating foundations. However, it does not include direct corporate giving programs and public charities are not included in the Foundation Finder database.
