Background
Philosophy/Focus Research on the prevalence, prevention, and treatment of cancer in poor and underserved populations has been identified as a target area for 10% of the research budget of the American Cancer Society.

Major Fields of Interest Proposals submitted in response to this request for applications (RFA) must focus on poor and underserved populations, but may address a variety of behavioral, epidemiological, policy, health delivery, clinical and basic science issues. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged and the novelty and uniqueness of the proposed projects will be an important aspect in the evaluations process.

Type of Grants It is estimated that approximately 5 research project grants or clinical research training grants and 3 post-doctoral fellowships can be awarded each funding cycle.

Selection Criteria Research project grants submitted in response to this RFA will be accepted from senior and beginning investigators. To insure a continuing supply of qualified investigators in areas addressed by this RFA, applications for postdoctoral fellowships and clinical research training grants from beginning investigators will also be accepted.

In general, research project grants awarded in response to this RFA will be for three years and up to $250,000 per year, including 25% indirect costs. Some behavioral or epidemiological studies might require more than three years and a higher budget. Such requests will be considered and must be well documented and justified.

Key Dates The first deadline for applications is April 1, 1999. The next deadline will be October 15, 1999. The same dates will be used in subsequent years. It is projected that this target will remain in effect for at least 3 years.
