Health Professional Training Grants

Background
Philosophy/Focus In response to identified needs in clinical oncology, the Society sponsors a program of grants in support of training for health professionals. The grants provide funding for individuals seeking to develop their clinical expertise and/or their ability to conduct independent research.

Health Professional Training Grants Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians (CCCDA):
This award is made to support primary care physicians with an academic rank of instructor to assistant professor pursuing a career with an emphasis on cancer control. Awards are made for three years with progressive stipends of $25,000, $30,000, and $35,000 per year.
Deadline: Applications must be received by the Society's Extramural Grants Department by October 1st.

Training Grants in Clinical Oncology Social Work (TGCOSW):
This award supports the training of second year master's students and post-master's level social workers to provide psychosocial services to persons with cancer and their families. One year awards are made for $8,000 at a master's level and for $12,000 at a post-master's level. (Note: effective with 1998 applications, a clinical component is no longer required for post-master's applications.)
Deadline: Applications must be received by the Society's Extramural Grants Department by October 1st.

Physician Training Awards in Preventive Medicine (PTAPM):
This award supports physician training in accredited preventive medicine residency programs which provide cancer prevention and control research and practice opportunities. In September 1998, the Society made significant changes to the program policies. Grant materials are currently being revised and will be made available via the www.cancer.org web site when complete. No applications will be accepted for the January 25, 1999 deadline. The new annual deadline will be April 1st. Notification of awards will be mailed the following October for grants to begin the following July 1st.

Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing (SCN):
This award supports doctoral degree students in nursing or in some related area. Awards are made at a master's level for up to two years and at a doctoral level for up to four years with a stipend of $8,000 per year.
Deadline: Applications must be received by the Society's Extramural Grants Department by December 15th.

Master's Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing (MSCN):
This award supports master's degree students in nursing or in some related area. Awards are made at a master's level for up to two years and at a doctoral level for up to four years with a stipend of $8,000 per year.
Deadline: Applications must be received by the Society's Extramural Grants Department by December 15th.

Professorship of Clinical Oncology (PCO):
This award is for outstanding clinicians and educators in the field of cancer who will enhance cancer education in medical, dental and other appropriate schools, and foster multidisciplinary cooperation in the care of persons with cancer. Only a limited number of awards are made annually. Awards are made for three to five years with a maximum of $40,000 per year. Applicants must be sponsored by their local American Cancer Society: Grants Division.
Deadline: Applications must be received by the Society's Extramural Grants Department by March 1st or October 1st.

Professorship in Oncology Nursing (PON):
This award is for outstanding clinicians, educators, and researchers in oncology nursing who will enhance the cancer curriculum in graduate and undergraduate programs. Only a limited number of awards are made annually. The awards are made for three to five years with a maximum stipend of $35,000 per year. Applicants must be sponsored by their local American Cancer Society: Grants Division.
Deadline: Applications must be received by the Society's Extramural Grants Department by March 1st or October 1st.
