AUSTIN, TX - Monday, March 30, 2009

Chairman Jimmy Mansour spoke at the Texas Healthcare and BioSciences Institute annual meeting on December 15th at the Doubletree Hotel in Austin, Texas. The above document is a PDF of his PowerPoint presentation.

TCC is Now CPRIT
The Texas Cancer Council (TCC) became the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) through legislation passed in November 2007. Texas voters approved Proposition 15 - HJR 90, the constitutional amendment which allows the State of Texas to establish the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (the Institute)
and allows the Institute to issue $3 billion in general obligation bonds over ten years to fund grants for cancer research and prevention. The Institute may invest the grants strategically in
cancer research, clinical trials, and laboratory facility construction in Texas. The Institute will continue to implement the Texas Cancer Plan.
The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute is charged by the Texas Legislature to:
-
Create and expedite innovation in the area of cancer research and in enhancing the potential for a medical or scientific breakthrough in the prevention of cancer and cures for cancer;
- Attract, create, or expand research capabilities of public or private institutions of higher education and other public or private entities that will promote a substantial increase in cancer research
and in the creation of high-quality new jobs in this state; and
-
Develop and implement the Texas Cancer Plan.
